HONG KONG, August 5, 2024 -- HKT announced its plan to terminate the provision of 2G services on 8 November 2024, in the light of decreasing market demand for such services. Spectrum resources currently utilised for 2G services will be redeployed for advanced mobile services to enhance network experience for its customers.
With the rapid advancement in digital services and technology, local consumers have shown growing demand for 5G mobile network and services. In the first half of 2024, the number of HKT’s 5G users has increased by over 12%, with penetration reaching 46% of its post-paid base. Meanwhile, the number of customers using 2G services has been declining, and accounted for only 0.36% of its mobile subscription base (including 1O1O, csl, Club Sim, Sun Mobile and other mobile virtual network operators) as of April this year. To better utilise the spectrum resources, the portion currently deployed for the provision of 2G services (including spectrum in the 900 MHz and 1,800 MHz bands) will be reallocated for higher generations of mobile services to drive 5G and advanced network development.
Bruce Lam, Chief Executive Officer, Consumer, HKT, said, “Connectivity has become an indispensable aspect of our daily lives. In line with our commitment to advancing 5G technology, we will continue to leverage our network resources and expertise to offer high-speed, low-latency connectivity experience that meet the growing demand and evolving needs of our customers.”
The existing 2G services will operate as usual until the termination on 8 November 2024. To ensure smooth transition to a higher generation of mobile services, HKT has been advising individual customers to upgrade their 2G mobile phones or devices since the last quarter of 2022. HKT will continue to assist the affected customers to upgrade their 2G mobile phones, devices or SIM cards, while offering proper arrangements to those who do not intend to upgrade.
