Questions around this news
What is the Sabah seagrass mapping collaboration intended to do?
The five-year collaboration is intended to support the mapping, conservation and management of seagrass meadows in Sabah. The partners also plan to engage local communities to build awareness of seagrass conservation and protection. The release says the programme is meant to help protect biodiversity and support socio-economic benefits for local communities.
Why is mapping seagrass meadows useful for conservation?
Mapping can help identify where seagrass grows and provide information about the extent and condition of those areas. Such information can assist conservation planning and monitoring. Seagrass habitats also support marine life and contribute to coastal ecosystems, so understanding their distribution can help guide efforts to protect them.
Who is involved in the Sabah programme, and how long will it run?
Yayasan PETRONAS and the Sabah Biodiversity Centre are the partners named in the memorandum of understanding. The release describes their collaboration as a five-year strategic effort focused on seagrass mapping and a community-based programme in Sabah. It does not provide a more detailed schedule of activities.
What role will local communities have in the programme?
The release says the collaboration will involve engagement with local communities to raise awareness and understanding of the importance of conserving and protecting seagrass. It presents community participation as an important part of taking positive action for the marine ecosystem, alongside the programme’s mapping and conservation work.
