July 18, 2024 -- JD.com is proud to announce its achievement of the “Top 1% S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) Score” in S&P Global’s 2024 Sustainability Yearbook for China, released on July 16th. As the sole leader in its industry to receive this distinction, JD.com was also recognized as an “Industry Mover,” affirming its leadership in sustainable practices.

S&P Global’s Sustainability Yearbook (China Edition) aims to identify and recognize Chinese companies that demonstrate sustainable development advantages in their respective industries. This recognition comes after a rigorous assessment of more than 1,700 Chinese companies.

Earlier this year, JD.com was recognized as an “Industry Mover” in the Yearbook’s global ranking for the first time.

JD.com also released its 2023 ESG Report on July 16th, which details its ongoing commitments and advancements in Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) domains, underscoring the substantial societal, industrial, and consumer value generated over the past year.

Questions around this news

  1. What recognition did JD.com receive in S&P Global’s 2024 Sustainability Yearbook for China?

The release says JD.com received the “Top 1% S&P Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) Score” distinction in the China edition and was also named an “Industry Mover.” It describes the company as the sole industry leader to receive the distinction. The yearbook recognition followed an assessment of more than 1,700 Chinese companies.

  2. What does a corporate sustainability assessment generally examine?

A corporate sustainability assessment generally evaluates how a company manages environmental, social and governance matters that may affect its operations and stakeholders. Depending on the assessment framework, it can consider policies, programs, performance measures and disclosure practices. Methods and criteria differ among assessors, so a score or recognition should be understood in the context of the framework used.

  3. What environmental initiatives did JD.com report for 2023?

The release reports that JD.com used 17.03 million reusable transfer bags, transitioned to 8,290 self-owned new energy vehicles and installed distributed photovoltaic systems across 31 industrial parks. It also says the company recycled more than 15 million old appliances and furniture items through trade-in initiatives and engaged 66 million users in sustainable practices.

  4. What does ESG mean in corporate reporting?

ESG stands for environmental, social and governance. The term groups topics companies may address in reporting, such as resource use and emissions, employee and community matters, and oversight, ethics and accountability. ESG reports vary in scope and detail; the label alone does not establish that all companies use the same measures or reporting standards.
