July 16, 2024 -- On July 9th, JD Super, the online supermarket division of JD.com, signed a direct procurement agreement with Malaysia-based Tanah Makmur Berhad (TMB) to import fresh durians, including popular varieties such as Musang King and Black Thorn. The first shipment of the natural tree-drop fruit is expected to arrive in China in September.
This collaboration follows the recent signing of the Protocol on Phytosanitary Requirements for the Export of Fresh Durian from Malaysia to China on June 19th, a significant milestone aimed at bolstering trade links between the two markets.
Ahead of this partnership, JD Super’s procurement team visited durian orchards in Raub, Pahang, known as the “home of Musang King,” to inspect the quality of the naturally ripened fruits. The team also visited local suppliers and processing factories to identify partners that meet JD’s stringent standards for safe and reliable delivery.

China is the world’s largest importer and consumer of durians, accounting for over 80% of the global annual fruit production. Since approving the import of frozen durian pulp and paste in 2011 and whole frozen durians in 2018, China now receives 78% of Malaysia’s durian exports, highlighting the strong demand within the Chinese market.

Questions around this news
What does JD Super’s agreement with Tanah Makmur Berhad cover?
The agreement is for direct procurement of fresh durians from Malaysia for import into China. The release names Musang King and Black Thorn among the varieties and says the fruit will be naturally tree-ripened. It also describes inspections of orchards, suppliers and processing facilities as part of the buyer’s effort to select partners for quality and delivery standards.
When is the first shipment of Malaysian fresh durians expected to reach China?
The release says the first shipment is expected to arrive in China in September. It does not give a specific arrival date or shipment size. The fruit is described as natural tree-drop durians, meaning it ripens on the tree and falls naturally, rather than being picked before it is ripe.
What are phytosanitary requirements for fruit exports?
Phytosanitary requirements are plant-health rules intended to prevent pests and plant diseases from crossing borders through traded crops. They may cover inspections, testing, treatment, documentation and conditions for producing or packing goods. Exporting and importing authorities establish these requirements to manage biological risks while enabling trade in agricultural products.
What does cold chain delivery mean?
Cold chain delivery is the handling and transportation of products within controlled temperature conditions from origin to destination. It can involve refrigerated storage, vehicles and monitoring at different stages. For perishable foods, maintaining suitable conditions helps preserve freshness and quality and limits spoilage during storage and transit.
