Questions around this news

  1. What did SBTi certify for Weathernews?

The certification covers Weathernews Inc.’s 2030 greenhouse gas reduction targets. The release says SBTi recognized them as Science Based Targets, meaning they are grounded in scientific evidence. It does not give the targets’ specific emissions-reduction amounts.

  2. What steps is Weathernews taking to reduce its environmental impact?

Weathernews says it has been optimizing its operations and using CO2-free electricity for all power consumed within the company since April 2023. It also describes its weather and climate services as part of its work to reduce risks associated with extreme weather.

  3. What does SBTi certification indicate?

SBTi certification indicates that an organization’s emissions-reduction targets have been assessed against climate science and the initiative’s criteria. The assessment considers whether a target aligns with efforts to limit global warming, rather than simply reflecting an organization’s preferred level of ambition.

  4. What does CO2-free electricity mean?

CO2-free electricity is electricity generated without direct carbon dioxide emissions at the point of generation. The term can cover different generation methods, and it does not by itself describe the full emissions associated with building, maintaining, or supplying the electricity system.

April 28, 2025 -- Weathernews Inc.’s 2030 GHG reduction targets have been certified by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) as Science Based Targets (SBTs) grounded in scientific evidence.

SBTi is an international climate change initiative jointly established by the United Nations Global Compact, CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project), WRI (World Resources Institute), and WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature), which reviews and certifies whether the emission reduction targets of companies and organizations around the world are in line with the Paris Agreement's goal of “keeping global temperature rise well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C.”

Our company has embraced the following vision: “We want to protect the lives of mariners. We also want to protect the future of the Earth,” guided by our founding principle, “We want to help people in times of crisis.” We aim to realize a sustainable society where human society, corporate activities, and the global environment are all sustainable.
Based on our recognition of the importance of initiatives to minimize the risks associated with extreme weather through weather and climate services and to reduce environmental impact, we are promoting optimization of our base by switching to CO2-free electricity for all power used within the company from April 2023. We will continue striving to work towards a sustainable society together with our supporters—our valued stakeholders.
