Springfield Student Named National Best All Rounder

December 19, 2023 -- Ampol has named Adam Varghese from St Peters Lutheran College Springfield as the national winner of the 2023 Best All Rounder competition.

Now in its 38th year, the Ampol Best All Rounder award saw over 2,000 high schools nationally participate in 2023. This is the second year Ampol has recognised state and national best all-rounder winners for their exceptional achievements.

Ampol Managing Director and CEO, Matt Halliday said: "As a proud Australian company, recognising the achievements of our emerging leaders has been a key aspect of Ampol's commitment to community for almost four decades.

"Whether it's endeavours in arts and culture, on the sporting field, in the classroom or within their own communities, we are delighted to celebrate our 2023 Ampol Best All Rounder Award recipients, in particular our national winner, Adam Varghese.

"Everyone at Ampol wishes to congratulate our state and national winners for their well-deserved accolade."

School captain Adam has a long list of achievements notwithstanding the two jobs he balances, the strong academic results he has achieved and the Certificate III in Allied Health Assistance he has completed.

Adam, who is a member of Ipswich's Youth Advisory Council, volunteered in Nepal for eight weeks last year and continues to assist the homeless as part of the Goodna Street Life. Adam also participated in his school's Indigenous Immersion program.

Aspiring for a career in medicine, Adam also recently raised $11,000 for the Leukemia Foundation in honour of his father who has been diagnosed with the disease. He was duly awarded the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award earlier this year.

As part of his recognition, Adam has won a laptop, a $5000 cash grant and a $1000 AmpolCash gift card, in addition to a $5000 grant for St Peters Lutheran College Springfield.

"St Peters Springfield is extremely proud of Adam. Adam has been an exceptional 2023 College captain who has shown great leadership, service and humility both within the classroom and within our community," St Peters Lutheran College Springfield principal Natalie Houston said.

"Adam is most deserving of the 2023 Ampol Best All Rounder Award, not simply because of what he has achieved but because of the compassionate, authentic and inspirational human being he is. Our St Peters College motto is: 'Plus Ultra' which means 'Ever Higher'. Adam encapsulates our motto every day. The College congratulates Adam on receiving this most prestigious award."

Throughout November and December, Ampol has named the six state winners of the Ampol Best All Rounder awards. The winning recipients received a $2000 cash grant and a $1000 AmpolCash gift card, in addition to a $2000 grant for their respective school.

The 2023 Ampol Best All Rounder Award state winners are:

• New South Wales: Edward Dodds, Tumut High School
• South Australia: Abigail Henderson-Mak, Urrbrae Agricultural High School, Netherby
• Tasmania: Aiyana Read, Elizabeth College, Hobart
• Victoria: Estelle Roberts, John Monash Science School, Clayton
• Western Australia: Malcolm van Burgel, North Albany Senior High School

The Best All Rounder Award is Ampol's longest running community program. Since 1985, more than 30,000 young Australians have been recognised in high schools across the country as their school's best all-rounder.

The program now forms part of Ampol's broader focus on education through its community partnerships. Other organisations supported through the Ampol Foundation include The Smith Family, Clontarf Foundation and Stars Foundation.
