Weebit ReRAM shows high reliability and endurance at extreme temperatures and after extensive cycling
HOD HASHARON, Israel, February 22, 2024 -- Weebit Nano Limited (ASX:WBT), a leading developer of advanced memory technologies for the global semiconductor industry, is demonstrating the high endurance and reliability of its Resistive Random-Access Memory (ReRAM or RRAM) in extended automotive conditions, including high temperatures of 150 degrees Celsius and extended program cycles.
The Weebit ReRAM module in SkyWater Technology’s 130nm CMOS (S130) process has already been fully qualified at temperatures of up to 125 degrees Celsius – the temperature specified for Grade-1 automotive applications. Now, as part of Weebit’s ongoing efforts to demonstrate performance at higher temperatures and higher endurance levels, the company is demonstrating:
- High endurance: 100K cycles*
- High-temperature stability: 150 degrees Celsius lifetime operation, including cycling and retention
Coby Hanoch, CEO of Weebit Nano, said: “The performance levels we’re achieving align with requirements specified by automotive companies. Demonstrating the resilience of Weebit ReRAM under these conditions will continue to enhance our position in this domain. Our latest results reaffirm the viability of Weebit ReRAM for use in microcontrollers and other automotive components, as well numerous other applications requiring high-temperature reliability and extended endurance. Weebit ReRAM is ideal for these applications, offering advantages including ease of integration, cost effectiveness, power efficiency and tolerance to radiation and electromagnetic fields.”
Questions around this news
What performance results did the ReRAM testing demonstrate?
The release reports demonstration of 100K program cycles, described as flash equivalent, and operation at 150 degrees Celsius, including cycling and data retention. It presents these as ongoing tests of performance under higher-temperature and higher-endurance conditions, beyond the module’s previously completed qualification for operation up to 125 degrees Celsius.
What is resistive random-access memory?
Resistive random-access memory, or ReRAM, stores information by changing the electrical resistance of a material in a memory cell. The resistance states represent data. ReRAM is a type of non-volatile memory, meaning it can retain stored information without continuous power, and it is studied for uses that need compact, energy-efficient memory.
What does automotive Grade 1 qualification mean in this release?
The release says the memory module in SkyWater Technology’s S130 process has been fully qualified at temperatures up to 125 degrees Celsius, identified as the temperature specified for Grade-1 automotive applications. The newer testing described in the announcement explores operation at higher temperatures; it is presented as a demonstration effort, not as completed qualification at that higher temperature.
What does it mean for a memory IP module to be available in a process design kit?
A process design kit is a set of files, models, and documentation that helps chip designers create circuits compatible with a particular semiconductor manufacturing process. When a memory IP module is supported in such a kit, designers can use the provided materials to incorporate and evaluate that memory within their chip designs and the process’s design rules.
Weebit’s Vice President of Quality and Reliability Amir Regev will present the test results during a session at the 8th Electron Devices Technology and Manufacturing Conference (IEEE EDTM 2024), being held in Bangalore, India, March 3-6, 2024.
The Weebit ReRAM IP module is available with full support in SkyWater’s S130 process design kit. The company is also working closely with DB HiTek to get its ReRAM technology qualified for customer designs. Find more details at www.weebit-nano.com/reram-s130.
