November 22, 2023, 9:34 AM ET

-- Sabah Ports Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of Suria Capital Holdings Berhad, successfully organized its annual Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Week, themed ‘Be a Safety Hero, Score Accident Zero.’

The HSE Week aims to enhance safety consciousness among employees and the port community by promoting active participation in safety management thus leading to reduced incidents, improved safety compliance, and an overall positive shift in awareness towards safe and sustainable practices.

According to the Group Managing Director for Suria Capital, Datuk Ng Kiat Min, “We recognize that a strong safety culture is essential for seaports which is why we have a clear safety framework in place which includes compliance to ISO 45001:2018, an international certification for health and safety standards at work, obtained by SPSB early this year. We are further guided by our internal HSE policy and are committed to continuous safety improvement.”

"HSE Week is a crucial initiative to bolster the framework, especially in providing the education to establish a safe and well-functioning workplace. It also offers employees at all levels a chance to contribute as safety heroes."

Topics covered during HSE week included talks on the latest amendments to Malaysia’s Occupational Safety & Health Act (OSHA) 1994, men’s health, electrical safety, obesity and mental health awareness, environmental marine conservation, and waste management.

Other activities included a blood donation drive, in collaboration with Hospital Queen Elizabeth II, where a total of 92 pints of blood were successfully collected during the campaign. A beach-cleaning program also took place at Sapangar Bay Container Port, together with Kota Kinabalu City Hall. A total of 293 bags full of trash were collected during the beach-cleaning event.

HSE Week was participated in by government agencies, port users, oil majors, University Malaysia Sabah, and the Kg. Kuala Menggatal, Sepanggar Bay community."
