SHAH ALAM, June 30, 2025 -- Gas Malaysia Berhad (“Gas Malaysia”), a member of MMC Group, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with leading British climate technology company Levidian to explore the deployment of the company’s patented LOOP technology in Malaysia and the wider region. This strategic collaboration aligns with Gas Malaysia’s long-term growth strategy and underscores its commitment to sustainability, innovation and delivering cleaner energy solutions.
Levidian’s LOOP decarbonisation device is a modular system that cracks methane to produce clean hydrogen and capture carbon in the form of high-quality graphene, a supermaterial with growing commercial relevance in industries such as automotive, batteries, paint & coatings, construction and advanced materials, to name a few. Under the terms of the MOU, both parties will collaborate on the deployment of a LOOP unit in Malaysia that will serve as a reference installation for further expansion toward broader regional commercialisation.
Signing the MoU on behalf of Gas Malaysia was En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap, President & Group Chief Executive Officer, accompanied by En. Akbar Md Thayoob, Senior Vice President of Corporate Strategy, as witness. Levidian was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Mr. John Hartley, with Ms. Ellie Galanis, Director of Commercial Development, as witness.

Commenting on the collaboration, The President & Group Chief Executive Officer of Gas Malaysia, En. Ahmad Hashimi Abdul Manap said, “We are pleased to partner with Levidian as it marks a significant step forward in our decarbonisation journey and pursuit of a sustainable future. By leveraging transformative technologies like LOOP, we aim to enhance the value of natural gas, diversify our revenue streams and reinforce our ESG agenda in support of Malaysia’s energy transition.”
He further elaborated, “Our venture into high-quality graphene aligns well with the goals of Malaysia’s New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030. Notably, graphene has been identified as one of four game-changing advanced materials under the National Advanced Materials Technology Roadmap 2021-2030, with the potential to transform the manufacturing sector. Building on Gas Malaysia’s strong presence in supplying natural gas to industrial customers, we are committed to elevating our value-added offerings with the introduction of graphene application across multiple industrial sectors.”
This strategic initiative is anchored on Gas Malaysia’s GM32 Strategy, a 10-year roadmap aimed at strengthening its core business, explore adjacencies along the gas value chain and diversify into cleaner energy solutions.
Levidian’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr John Hartley commented, “This MoU lays the foundation for an impactful collaboration, delivering both economic and environmental value through innovation. We are proud to partner with Gas Malaysia in bringing LOOP to Southeast Asia, supporting both the region’s decarbonisation goals and wider adoption of graphene as we continue on our journey to become one of the world’s largest producers of high-quality, more sustainable graphene.”
“By aligning innovation with sustainability, we aspire to add value for our customers while contributing meaningfully to the nation’s industrial transformation and low-carbon future,” En Ahmad Hashimi concluded.

Questions around this news
What does the Gas Malaysia–Levidian MoU cover?
The companies plan to work together on deploying a LOOP unit in Malaysia. The installation is intended to serve as a reference site for possible further expansion and commercialisation in the region. The release describes the agreement as an MoU to explore deployment, rather than as a completed installation or a commitment to a wider rollout.
How does Levidian’s LOOP technology work?
The release describes LOOP as a modular device that splits methane to make hydrogen and captures carbon as graphene. Methane cracking is a process in which methane molecules are separated into hydrogen and solid carbon, rather than producing carbon dioxide as the direct carbon-containing product. The release does not provide operating details or performance figures for the proposed Malaysian installation.
What is graphene used for?
Graphene is a form of carbon made up of a single layer of atoms arranged in a very thin sheet. Its electrical, mechanical and thermal properties have prompted research and commercial applications in areas such as coatings, composites, electronics and energy storage. Performance depends on how the material is produced and incorporated into a product.
What is an MoU?
A memorandum of understanding is a document that records parties’ intentions to cooperate on a defined subject. It can set out areas of collaboration and next steps, but its legal effect depends on its wording and the circumstances. Signing an MoU does not by itself establish that every proposed activity will proceed or amount to a finalized commercial contract.
