In recent years, the semiconductor market has grown rapidly driven by the expansion of AI, 5G, and IoT, with particularly strong demand for advanced semiconductors used in AI applications. Fujifilm’s semiconductor materials business achieved an average annual sales growth rate of approximately 20% from FY2021 through FY2025 and has become one of the core businesses driving the growth of the Fujifilm Group. To support this growth, Fujifilm invested more than 100 billion yen from FY2021 to FY2024. For example, the company expanded production capacity for CMP slurries2 in Japan, the United States, and Taiwan, and CMP slurries have become one of the key products driving business growth. Fujifilm has also increased production capacity for polyimides3 in Japan and Belgium, while demand for its photosensitive dielectric materials for advanced packaging, including ZEMATES™*4, has grown rapidly. The company continues to make growth investments across Japan, the United States, Europe, and Asia during FY2025 and FY2026, and will continue supporting the growth of the semiconductor market by providing a broad lineup of products.

The post-CMP cleaners manufactured at the Oita Factory are used after CMP processes to remove particles, trace metals, and organic residues while protecting metal surfaces. Demand is rapidly increasing not only for CMP slurries, which are essential for planarization processes required to improve semiconductor performance, but also for post-CMP cleaners used in subsequent cleaning processes. Leveraging its strength in providing integrated solutions incorporating both CMP slurries and post-CMP cleaners, Fujifilm is expanding sales globally, particularly among customers in North America, Europe, and key semiconductor manufacturing hubs in Asia, where demand growth in the advanced semiconductor market remains strong.

In brief

FUJIFILM Corporation says it has completed a new post-CMP cleaner production building at the Oita Factory of FUJIFILM Electronic Materials Co., Ltd., which began operating in August. The facility is intended to expand supply of materials used to clean semiconductor surfaces after polishing, including for advanced chips used in AI applications. Fujifilm says the building will triple the factory’s production capacity and includes automated manufacturing and quality evaluation equipment. The company reports that its semiconductor materials business recorded approximately 20% average annual sales growth from FY2021 through FY2025. It also says it invested more than 100 billion yen in the business from FY2021 to FY2024. Fujifilm expects post-CMP cleaner sales to more than double by FY2030 compared with FY2024 and says rooftop solar panels will help reduce factory-related greenhouse gas emissions.

Key takeaways

  • The new Oita building began operations in August and is dedicated to post-CMP cleaners for semiconductor manufacturing.
  • Fujifilm says the facility will triple post-CMP cleaner production capacity at the Oita Factory.
  • The company expects post-CMP cleaner sales to more than double by FY2030 compared with FY2024.
  • The facility includes rooftop solar panels intended to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from factory operations.

Driven by advancements in semiconductor miniaturization and 3D stacking technologies required to improve the performance of AI semiconductors, demand for Fujifilm’s post-CMP cleaners, which play a critical role in semiconductor manufacturing yield, is expected to more than double in terms of sales by FY2030 compared with FY2024. The new production building is equipped with automated manufacturing facilities and quality evaluation equipment designed to meet the extremely high purity requirements of cutting-edge semiconductor materials. By tripling production capacity at the Oita Factory, Fujifilm aims to further expand its business in the advanced semiconductor market.

Solar panels have been installed on the roof of the new building. Through greater use of renewable energy at the Oita Factory, Fujifilm will reduce greenhouse gas emissions generated by factory operations.

Questions around this news

  1. What do post-CMP cleaners do in semiconductor manufacturing?

These cleaning materials are applied after chemical mechanical planarization (CMP), a polishing step used to smooth semiconductor surfaces. They help remove particles, traces of metal, and organic residue left behind by polishing, while helping protect metal features. Cleaning after polishing supports the preparation of the wafer for later manufacturing steps.

  2. What is Fujifilm’s new Oita facility designed to produce?

The new building at the Oita Factory makes post-CMP cleaners, which are used after polishing during semiconductor production. It began operating in August 2026. Fujifilm says equipment for automated manufacturing and quality evaluation is installed there, and that production capacity at the Oita Factory will reach three times its previous level.

  3. What does Fujifilm expect for post-CMP cleaner sales by FY2030?

Fujifilm says sales of its post-CMP cleaners are expected to more than double by FY2030 compared with FY2024. The company links this outlook to semiconductor miniaturization and 3D stacking, which it says are important to improving AI semiconductor performance. The cleaners also play a role in manufacturing yield, according to the release.

  4. What is chemical mechanical planarization?

Chemical mechanical planarization is a semiconductor-manufacturing process that combines chemical action and mechanical polishing to make a wafer surface flatter. A slurry containing abrasive particles is applied during polishing. Planar surfaces help support the precise formation of additional layers and structures during chip production.
