July 14, 2025 -- CATL has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the world-leading resources company, BHP Group Limited (BHP) to collaborate in battery technology and electrification.

CATL and BHP will explore opportunities in battery development for mining equipment and locomotives including rapid charging infrastructure, as well as seeking to understand energy storage systems and battery recycling options for BHP's mining applications.

As a global leader of new energy innovative technologies, CATL is committed to building a zero-carbon future leveraging advanced technologies. It is developing cutting-edge battery technologies and energy solutions that support the energy transition and e-mobility.

CATL's innovation presents exciting opportunities to accelerate the mining industry's decarbonisation transition, aligning with BHP's long-term goal to achieve net zero operational greenhouse gas emissions (Scopes 1 and 2 from its operated assets) by CY2050.

Through this MOU, the collaboration will not only identify pathways for electrification at BHP's mining operations, but also focus on opportunities to advance the circular economy by enhancing battery recycling processes, especially leveraging BHP's copper operations, establishing more sustainable value chains within the mining sector.

Questions around this news

  1. What does the CATL–BHP memorandum of understanding cover?

The two companies plan to explore collaboration on battery development for mining equipment and locomotives, including rapid-charging infrastructure. They will also examine energy storage systems and battery recycling options for mining applications. The release describes the agreement as a way to identify electrification opportunities at BHP operations and explore ways to improve battery recycling, particularly in connection with copper operations.

  2. What is BHP's operational net-zero target?

BHP's stated long-term goal is to reach net-zero operational greenhouse gas emissions by calendar year 2050. The target covers Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions from assets it operates. The release links the CATL collaboration to identifying ways to support electrification and decarbonisation at BHP's mining operations.

  3. What is a memorandum of understanding?

A memorandum of understanding is a document that records the shared intentions of parties considering or undertaking a collaboration. It commonly outlines areas of cooperation and a framework for further work, but its legal effect depends on its wording and the circumstances; it does not necessarily constitute a binding contract.

  4. How can battery recycling support a circular economy in mining?

Battery recycling can recover useful materials from batteries at the end of their service life, allowing some materials to be processed for reuse rather than discarded. In mining, this can connect battery use with resource recovery and supply chains. The specific processes and benefits depend on battery chemistry, collection systems, and recycling methods.
