26.8 million toys sent to landfill in Australia every year Toy amnesty in Altona Gate until third week of March – 500 toys donated in first week
February 27, 2024 -- Altona Gate has launched an innovative used toys donation program in partnership with Moose Toys and Circonomy to help divert unused toys away from landfill.

Positioned on the Ground level of Altona Gate is a colourful Bag It, Tag It and Drop It station, allowing the community to donate their unwanted toys which will then be sorted through before being either rehomed, repaired, or recycled via charity partners.
Helping to raise awareness and educate the local community to try new ways to discard unwanted toys, the program will encourage families to bring in toys they may have outgrown, are no longer working, or would simply like to regift. Circonomy will then sort the toys to understand which items may be suitable for donations, safely repaired or recycled, avoiding unnecessary materials ending up in landfill.

Products and programs
“The program demonstrates our commitment to sustainability and our place in the community. We’ve had a fantastic response to the program so far with 489 toys, weighing 123 kg already donated, and I’m looking forward to seeing where we finish at the end of the program.”
Chris Holmes
Altona Gate Centre Manager
There are an estimated 26.8 million toys that end up in landfill in Australia each year and through the partnership, Altona Gate is helping to divert some of those toys to new homes in the same way Northland did in 2023.
The program at Altona Gate comes after a successful trial at Northland shopping centre in Melbourne’s northern suburbs where customers donated almost 4,000 toys, preventing over 700kg of waste going to landfill. Of the 4,000 toys donated, an impressive 98% were able to be successfully cleaned, repaired and rehomed to families in need.

In brief
Altona Gate has started a used-toy donation program with Moose Toys and Circonomy. A collection station at the centre accepts unwanted toys, which Circonomy will sort for possible donation, repair or recycling through charity partners. The program is intended to help families find new uses for toys they have outgrown or no longer need. Altona Gate Centre Manager Chris Holmes says 489 toys weighing 123 kg had been donated at the time of the release. The initiative follows a trial at Melbourne’s Northland shopping centre, where the release says almost 4,000 toys were donated and more than 700 kg of waste was kept from landfill. It reports that 98% of those toys were cleaned, repaired and rehomed to families in need. The Altona Gate program is scheduled to run until the third week of March.
